Long Running Script Error

Dear Computer Lady,

I have 2 questions for you that I am hoping will be easy fixes.

I keep getting a ‘long running script’ error on a lot of the websites I use. Is there something I can do to eliminate the problem? I do hit ‘stop’ which sometimes works but not always unfortunately.

Also, does anyone else complain of issues with ads on internet explorer. This especially happens if I am trying to write an email–nothing works until the new ad is finished loading. Two very annoying, but hopefully fixable, problems. I guess it can always be worse though….

Thanks for your time and for providing a wonderful service. It is appreciated. Diana

Dear Diana,

First, lets look at what a “Long Running Script” really is. A script is usually some Java Script code that Internet Explorer is trying to run, you can think of it as a small program or application.

When Internet Explorer (IE) encounters a script, it looks at the number of lines in the code of the script and if it is longer than 5 million lines of code, IE will give you the long running script error message. Unfortunately, IE also pauses the script until you select an action.

Since you have no control over the scripts on a web page that you don’t own, your only option would be to make sure IE doesn’t display a notification about every script error it finds. You can turn off notifications following these directions:

1. Open Internet Explorer and click on the, “Tools” icon in the upper-right corner. It looks like a gear.

2. In the drop-down list under tools, click on “Internet Options”

3. In the Internet Options window, click on the “Advanced” tab.

4. In the list of settings, find the one that says, “Display a notification about every script error” and if there is a check mark in front of it, click to remove the check mark.

5. Click the “OK” button at the bottom of the dialog box to save your changes and close the window.

I believe your second problem is probably related to the first one. Since your message came from a yahoo email address, which is free for you to use, but supported by the advertisements. The ads that you are getting could be from yahoo. Another possible cause could be that you are infected with some sort of advertising malware. If that is the case, the ads would be on every web page you visit, not just the email pages. Those advertisements could also be the long running scripts that IE is warning you about.
