Windows 8 Not Playing AVI Files
.Dear Computer Lady,
I have been reading your newsletter for a long time and continue to enjoy and learn from you and many of your readers.
I did not like windows 8.1 at first but after giving it a good try I really like the tiles and the touch screen. I am still learning to navigate it but have found it to be a lot of fun.
I have a question that I hope you can help with. I have several avi. files that play on my windows 7 laptop using Windows Media Player but when I put them on my windows 8.1 Asus conversion tablet they cannot play them even though I use Windows Media Player. I don’t know what I am doing wrong.
Thank you for your newsletter, Mike H in Maine
I am pleased to hear that you enjoy and learn from my writing.
The most likely reason that you can’t play your AVI files in Windows 8 is that Windows Media Player doesn’t have the correct AVI compressor/decompressor (codec).
In order to play your AVI files, you will need to download and install the codecs first. You will need the DivX and/or XviD codecs.
There are a lot of places online that offer these codecs as “free” downloads, but you need to be cautious when downloading free things since a lot of adware and malware often sneaks in with the software you are trying to download.
I usually download my codecs from magicdvdripper.com on the download page. I already use this program, and have downloaded their codecs multiple times with no problems. Just click on the “Download” page and scroll to the bottom of the page.
Once you download and install these codecs, you should be able to play your AVI files.
It’s Your Turn: What do you think?
