Pictures Not Appearing In Emails

Dear Computer Lady,

When I receive email with images, the images do not appear, although the box is there for them.

I checked email preferences and HTML is checked and below it says images will be forwarded with HTML. What am I doing wrong?

I read your column in the paper each Friday, and I haven’t seen this problem mentioned.

Dear Elinor,

This is actually a fairly common question, but I don’t have a simple, or universal answer for you.

The truth is that there are a lot of reasons why you might not be able to view images, and the problem could be on your end, or on the senders end. There is no way to tell for sure without a little investigation and a lot of questions.

The problem could be with the settings in your email program, but since you didn’t mention what email program you are using, I can’t tell you what the settings should be.

The problem could be that the sender doesn’t have their email program set up correctly, but again, without knowing what program they are using, and what their settings are, I can’t give you specifics.

The problem could be in the process of converting a message from one email format to another. AOL email seems to have a lot of those types of problems.

The problem could be with your security software. Some security programs block images from people that are not in your address list, or that come from questionable sources.

I know I haven’t really answered your question, but, hopefully I have give you a direction to investigate further in. If you can’t find the answer you are looking for, give me a call and we can set up a time for you to bring the computer in for diagnostics.
